What They're Saying

Oh, my gosh! We did the 'water temperature' activity today. I sent for my principal and snagged a few teachers from the hall to get an eye full. It was the best single lesson I've done this year.

The Grade 1 Year

Grade 1 students jump right into action with three Work Places (workstation activities) using Unifix® cubes, pattern blocks, and polydrons. Children learn facts about sea creatures with delightful poems and songs as they sort, count, and pattern. (There are 42 Work Places in all). Skills practice begins with the Number Corner calendar routines which later in the year add daily challenges such as Monday's Money and Tuesday's Time.

As the year progresses, students move from counting into addition, subtraction, place value and geometry. They play Work Place games like An Hour or Bust! and solve pattern block puzzles. Two integrated theme units, Penguins and My Little Farm, integrate math, science, social studies, art, and literacy.

Over the course of a year, 18 Home Connections, as well as five travel games, go home to involve families in their children's math education. Students also use software to experiment with pattern blocks and simple quilt patterns.

Four of the six units in Grade 1 include individual assessment interviews. There are also assignments earmarked as work samples, along with notes discussing how to interpret children's work. In addition, Number Corner uses monthly skills tests to assess student progress.
