What They're Saying

The children can visualize math and understand patterns in it. They are much more capable of exploring how they got an answer. All of the children enjoy math and are actively involved. No one is ‘afraid’ of it anymore!

The Grade 2 Year

Grade 2 children begin the year by studying patterns and functions, addition and subtraction, and geometry. Next they tackle the first of two applied math units, which integrate math, scientific research, and experimental design. Work Places (workstation activities) begin with opportunities to explore with the manipulatives and as the year progresses children engage in games and activities like Beat You to $2.00. In all there are 60 Work Places.

Skills practice with Number Corner makes regular use of the Calendar Grid throughout the year as well as other features like the Hundreds Grid and Daily Measure.

As the year progresses the focus shifts to place value, statistics and probability, fractions, and operations with larger numbers. Students make and solve picture problems, create class charts and quilts, and share cookies and candy bars on their way to mathematical understanding. Children also use software to create and manipulate Unifix® cubes on the computer screen. The 32 Home Connections provide another source of practice and reinforcement outside the classroom.

Many Grade 2 units begin and end with paper/pencil tasks that enable teachers to see short-term growth in a particular area. In addition, units feature individual assessment interviews, observation checklists, and projects earmarked as work samples. There are also four sets of tests that examine students' long-term growth in a variety of areas.
