About Algebra Through Visual Patterns
Algebra Through Visual Patterns draws together much of the material that originally appeared in the Math and the Mind's Eye algebra units and later in the Visual Mathematics courses.
The program offers a genuine alternative to the usual algebra course. It calls for an approach to learning in which teachers and students collaborate to create a classroom in which students:
- Explore algebraic concepts using manipulatives, models and sketches.
- Engage in meaningful discourse on their learning of mathematics.
- Present their methods, rationale, and solutions to problems, both orally and in writing.
- Build on existing knowledge to increase their understanding.
The ideas and lessons presented are appropriate for all students involved in learning first-year algebra regardless of grade level. Activities are both accessible and challenging to students of varying backgrounds, abilities, and levels of understanding.
